The working genoa was ripped and a few reinforcements needed to be re-glued. It is amazing how the Cuben Fiber sails survived 8 years of heavy usage. Compliments to the sail-maker, Roger Hall in NZ. A new set of grommets had to be inserted to the trampolines. The cleaning will be next, and then LAUNCHING!!!

This time no photo, no video, just words. It was unbelievable: We crossed the Boiling Reef, south of Saturna Island, Canadian West Coast. All of a sudden we were in the midst of a 40, 50, or 60 Orcas of all sizes: high back fins were sticking out of the water and little tails splashing on the surface. We had never experienced such an intensive spectacle! We can only say, you had to be there.

We started out with three boats (two F33s, one F31) from Cowichan Bay. North! In a couple of days we reached Desolation Sound. We hung out in Grace Harbour for a day, enjoyed superb seafood at the Laughing Oyster in Okeover Inlet. The two F33s continued: First to Octopus Islands, then to Shoal Bay. At that time we had to realize that the allotted days for reaching the Broughtons would not be enough. Probably one should have gone up north via the Discovery Passage and the Johnson Strait. This is much shorter although may turn out more challenging. Photos: click here. A longish video: click here.
Nevertheless, it was a superb cruise with exercises in patience, safety, and relaxation, with long stretches of motoring and exciting sailing passages. Our F33s have proven again to be the ultimate cruising machines.

It was a mild day, the spinnaker went up, the breeze was steady - a perfect day.
Of course, a perfect day has its little kinks: we ripped the screacher in the head, forgot the fluids that contain spirits, and my shoes were too tight.
The highlight of the day was a good sized hump back whale - or grey whale - that accompanied us for a while. A sleepy sea-otter was not interested in us when suntanning its feet. The bold eagles showed off their young ones. The world seems to be in order?

This seems to be a matter of great concern to most f-boat sailors - and it should be. However, the risk of any accident or failure during this operation is greatly reduced by simply doing it twice at the same time. One needs to rig two independent sets of lines and blocks and use two winches to lift the mast. I have done this together with a friend as well as alone. Operating two self-tailing winches allows for this operation to be done without blood, sweat, or tears. Have a look at the sequence of events here. We are using inexpensive blocks (no snap-shackles, though) and genoa and spinnaker sheets.

There is no need for analysis of forces in the lines or on the blocks. It has been tried and tested many times. The magic word for success and safety is: redundancy.

Venanda Marina on Texada Island: resting after a long days sail, now a cool drink, and then up the hill to the terrific pub with marvelous food. Venanda is one of the few marinas on the way up to Desolation Sound. The warfinger and his wife are real originals, you don't want to miss meeting them. We always enjoyed the short trip from Dave Prichards Marina at Pender Habour to the northern Texada. This stretch is often rather windy, however, we were lucky again, as you can see.

With just two in-shore course boats having rounded and therefore eligible to win, John Green pulled out all the stops in his bid to beat his multihull rival, Hi5. As the 17:30 time approached when the race would be called, John went so far as dropping his sails (yes, his sails) and installing the sail covers, in the hopes that the Hi5 skipper would fall for this ploy and turn on his engine before the deadline. But, a sailor himself and obviously savvy to the tricks, Sigi Stiemer was having none of it, and ended up winning the Rosedale Rock Race, with Sauterelle finishing in second place. Phew! We'd hate to see such underhanded attempts to win rewarded!
